Setting Up Rocket Broadcaster
Rocket Broadcaster is an audio encoder that can send your microphone and music to a Shoutcast or Icecast stream, allowing you to sing live in Second Life.
This guide walks you through downloading, installing, and configuring Rocket Broadcaster so you can connect to a stream and start performing.
What Is Rocket Broadcaster?
Rocket Broadcaster is an audio encoder used to stream live audio to services such as Shoutcast and Icecast. In Second Life, an encoder like Rocket Broadcaster lets you send your microphone and music into a venue’s audio stream so others can hear you perform live.
Rocket Broadcaster has both free and paid versions. The free version is enough for many basic streaming situations, while the paid version includes additional features that may be useful for more advanced setups.
Step 1: Download Rocket Broadcaster
Download Rocket Broadcaster from the official website:
https://www.rocketbroadcaster.com/
Choose the free download unless you already know you need features from the Pro version. Rocket Broadcaster is only available for Windows.
Always download from the official site to ensure you are getting a safe and up-to-date version.
Step 2: Install Rocket Broadcaster
Run the installer you downloaded and follow the setup prompts.
For most users, the default installation options are fine. Once installation is complete, launch Rocket Broadcaster.
Step 3: Configure Rocket Broadcaster
Before you can go live, Rocket Broadcaster needs to know where to send your audio and which audio source to use.
Stream Connection Details
On the Rocket Broadcaster Main Window (see 2.1), access the Broadcast menu and select the Streams… command. The Rocket Broadcaster Streams Configuration Window will now appear (see 3.1).
In the Stream Connection Details section, enter the following:
- Name
- Hostname or IP
- Port Number
- Password
You also need to select the stream Type, which will most likely be Shoutcast 1 (Legacy).
Audio Codec
One more step in setting up a stream in Rocket Broadcaster remains. In the Stream Configuration Window (see 3.1), click the Customize… button in the Audio Codec section to access the Encoder Settings (see 3.2).
In the Encoder Settings window, select the following:
- Codec: MP3
- Bitrate: 128 kbps or 196 kbps
- Channels: 2 (Stereo)
- Samplerate: 44100 Hz
